About Thunder Bay Hydro
Thunder Bay Hydro is responsible for the power line system within the city limits of Thunder Bay and for delivering electricity to the homes and businesses here.
Thunder Bay Hydro answers billing questions, reads meters, offers energy conservation advice and programs, plans & maintains the local power line system and provides 24-hour emergency response.
System
Thunder Bay Hydro distributes electricity to over 49,000 customers via a network of over 1,300 kilometers (815 miles) of overhead and underground power lines - that's almost the distance between here and Toronto! The energy to do all of this comes from our staff of 130 employees.
History
Our history dates back to the 1890s when we were two separate utilities, the Port Arthur Public Utilities Commission and Fort William Hydro. In 1970, we were amalgamated, along with the two cities, into Thunder Bay Hydro.
Today, we are a private local distribution company owned by the City of Thunder Bay and run by the Thunder Bay Hydro Board , which consists of 5 members appointed by City Council.
