Energy Savings Tips
Lighting & Controls
There are a number of steps you can take to save money on your lighting expenses, from replacing bulbs with more efficient models to using solar energy.
It's A Fact
- Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use 75% less energy than incandescent lamps for the same amount of light and last up to eight times longer.
Suggested Fluorescent Replacements:
- 40 watts 9 watt CFL
- 60 watts 13 or 15 watt CFL
- 75 watts 18 or 20 watt CFL
- 100 watts 28 watt CFL
- Compact fluorescent lamps come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.
- When selecting compact fluorescent lamps, remember that the greatest savings occur if used where lights are on for long periods of time.
- Photocells turn lights off during daylight hours.
- Occupancy and motion sensors turn lights on or off when someone enters or leaves a room, and are commonly used for security reasons outside the home to turn lights on when someone is in the yard.
Helpful Hints
- Convert incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps.
- Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
- Keep light bulbs and fixtures clean - dirt will reduce light output.
- Use task lighting for close work, rather than lighting the entire room.
- Paint walls light colours to reflect more light.
- Insulate your recessed pot lights to reduce heat loss into the attic.
- Switch to lower-wattage bulbs where possible. Rooms can be overlit.
- Control the intensity of light with dimmer switches. Dimmable compact fluorescents must be used to avoid premature failure.
- Turn lights on or off at preset times with timers or use photocells or motion sensors.
- Use solar-powered lights outdoors. They soak up sunlight during the day and cast a gentle glow on your patio or the pathway to your door at night.
