Line Logger Loan Program
This device can teach you a lot about where your electricity dollars are spent. (Learn about Phantom Load) A line logger measures the energy consumption of an appliance (120 volt) and converts the measurement to kilowatt hours.
- Call Thunder Bay Hydro customer service 343-1131 to arrange to borrow one.
- Drop into your branch of the Thunder Bay Public Library to sign one out using your library card.
It is simple to use. Just plug the line logger into a wall receptacle, then plug the appliance into the logger. Leave the appliance plugged in for 24 hours. The line logger will tell you the energy (in kilowatt hours, or kWh) used by the appliance for one day. With a simple calculation, you can determine the energy used and cost of running that appliance monthly.
Calculation:
kWh x 30 days (one month) x 9 cents (cost/kWh) = monthly cost of using that appliance
Sample calculation using an 80 watt television:
0.65 kWh (recorded by line logger) x 30 days x .09 (9 cents/kWh) = $1.76 per month
