Acquiring Residential Electrical Service

If you are building or renovating a house in the City of Thunder Bay and require a new service (up to 200 amps), the following six steps must be completed:

Click here for PDF version (opens in a new window).

Step One - Meet with a Line Supervisor

You will need to meet with one of our Line Supervisors to discuss where your service wires and hydro meter should be located. To set up an appointment, call our Power Systems Office at 343-1176.

Step Two - Offer to Connect Form

The Line Supervisor completes an Offer to Connect form indicating your cost (if any) to install your new service.

Step Three - Make Payment, If Required

If the Offer to Connect indicates that your are to pay a cost for your new service installation, you must pay the full amount. You can do this two ways:

  • by forwarding a cheque or money order to our Accounting Department, 34 N. Cumberland St., P7A 4L4
  • by VISA credit card in person* at our Accounting Dept. on the 8th floor of 34 N. Cumberland St. (between 8 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays).
    * no telephone credit card payments will be accepted.

Step Four - Set Up a TBH Account

Next, set up an account with our Customer Service Department, located on the main floor at 34 N. Cumberland Street. Call 343-1111 (press 1) for more information.

Step Five - Contact the E.S.A.

Before your house can be wired, the person wiring your home must contact the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) at 1-877-372-7233 to take out a wiring permit (or "Electrical Inspection Application"). There is a fee for the electrical inspection service.

Step Six - Arrange for Inspection

When the electrical servicing is complete, contact the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) at 1-877-372-7233 to arrange for an inspection.

When the ESA Inspector's authorization is received, our Customer Service Department prepares a service connection order that is forwarded to our Power Systems office and, within 10 working days, your power will be connected.
