Safety Services

Call Before You Dig!

Call before You digFor your safety, we ask that, before you do any digging in an area where there are underground power lines, you give us a call first. We provide an underground cable location service at no charge during normal working hours. We will mark the location of the buried line, so you know where you can dig safely.

Call Before You DigCall us when digging for:

  • tree planting
  • party tents
  • children's inflatable activity centres
  • fence posts
  • decks
  • pool excavation

Making contact with underground power lines can cause serious injury - even death, so please call us ahead.

To contact our locates department, call 343-1111.

Freeze Up Period

Thunder Bay Hydro discontinues underground service installations during the normal Freeze Up period of mid November to mid May each year.

To be eligible for installation prior to Freeze Up, a service must have an Electrical Safety Authority inspection completed by November 1 of each year.

During this period, all customers, including residential customers in subdivisions, will be responsible for the digging and backfilling of their own trench for all underground services.

For any further information and options, please contact Thunder Bay Hydro Power Systems at 343-1176.

Tree Trimming

Mini Arborist at workTrees planted under power lines can grow to be a hazard. Not only can they be the cause of power outages, they can also endanger adventurous, tree-climbing children.

In case of an emergency, please call us right away at 343-1176 (office hours) or 343-1002 (after hours).

If you have trees that you believe are interfering with power lines or your service line, call us to assess the situation and advise you on a course of action. To request an assessment, call 343-1176.
